Fundholder Highlights – October 2022

Arlington’s Guarantee celebrates 1 year

Moderated by Anne Vor der Bruegge, Arlington Community Foundation Director of Grants and Initiatives, the recording of September’s informative and uplifting discussion takes a look at where Arlington’s Guarantee has been, where we are now, and what the future looks like for the pilot and the guaranteed income movement. Anne is joined by:

  • Dr. Aisha Nyandoro, Co-Chair of the National Guaranteed Income Community of Practice and CEO of Springboard to Opportunities
  • Anita Friedman, Arlington County Human Services Director
  • Brian Marroquin, Arlington Community Foundation Program Officer
  • Mary Bogle, Principal Research Associate, Urban Institute

Leading up to the virtual event, five of Arlington’s Guarantee participants generously shared their stories with us and what the pilot has meant to them and their families so far. Learn more about them during the webinar recording or by reading them below.

PARTICIPANT
STORIES

The County’s vision is that Arlington is “a diverse and inclusive world-class urban community… in which each person is important.”

The participants of Arlington’s Guarantee represent that vision. We value them, and they belong here. Meet eleven participants who have generously shared a small part of their story and what their experience has been in the pilot so far.

Unless otherwise noted, stock images and pseudonyms are used to protect participant identities.

Deeply Affordable Housing in Arlington

Recent poverty information for Arlington indicates that nearly 24,300 individuals–just over 10% of our population–are trying to make ends meet at or below 30% of our Area Median Income, or $42,690 for a family of four.

Current data shows that living costs for such a household in Arlington average three times that. These lower wage earners and their families are at high risk of displacement.

housing supply mismatch

As part of our Shared Prosperity efforts, we are working with urgency to ensure that the plan guiding the Barcroft Apartments redevelopment results in 255 30% AMI committed affordable units, matching this spring’s count of current 30% AMI households. In September, we released a report outlining the need and recommendations, as well as a call to action to keep these units affordable for the long-term. ARLNow recently featured our recommendations in an article about affordable housing development in Arlington.

During September, we also had the privilege to attend the opening of Lucille and Bruce Terwilliger Place, where 26 units are deeply affordable to households earning no more than 30% AMI. Learn more about Terwilliger Place here.

2022 Spirit of Community

Join us November 10th at The Westin Arlington Gateway.

After two years of virtual events, Arlington Community Foundation’s Spirit of Community Awards celebration will be held in person on November 10th at the Westin Arlington Gateway. This year, once again, we will bring hundreds of business, civic, and philanthropic attendees together to celebrate local individuals who are tirelessly committed to improving the quality of life in Arlington.

For the first time in 29 years, we’ll be honoring three extraordinary people with the Spirit of Community Award: Portia Clark, Mark Riley, and Dr. Mike Silverman. We at the Foundation have been spending time with the honorees as we prepare for the event, and we cannot wait to share a bit of their stories, their passion, and their love for Arlington with you on November 10th.

Learn more about the honorees, save your seat (or table), and secure a sponsorship opportunity here or at the button below.
