Established in 1993, the William T. Newman, Jr. Spirit of Community Award recognizes and honors those who have demonstrated tireless and unselfish commitment to improving the quality of life in Arlington. This event consists of a luncheon, attended by members of the business community, local government, non-profit organizations and other members of the community.
The award is named for Arlington Community's founder and president emeritus, The Honorable William T. Newman Jr. Judge Newman, chief judge of the Arlington Circuit Court, is a lifelong Arlingtonian who has been involved in Arlington County board as chairman, the Arlington legal and nonprofit sectors and has served as a role model for youth.
The 2010 recipient of the William T. Newman, Jr. Spirit of Community Award was The Honorable George D. Varoutsos. Judge Varoutsos has served Arlington for over 12 years as a Juvenile and Domestic Relations Judge.
