John F. Benton Biography

John was named Deputy Under Secretary Emeritus of the Smithsonian Institution upon his retirement in May 2018 completing 17 years with the Institution and a distinguished 45-year career in the management, administration, and operations of large government and non-profit organizations. During his service as a senior executive with the Smithsonian, John served as the Institution’s Deputy Under Secretary for Finance and Administration, the National Zoo’s Associate Director for Finance and Administration, and the National Air and Space Museum’s Associate Director for Management and Public Programs.

He held prior positions in the Departments of Treasury and Health and Human Services as well as in Virginia state government and the private sector. John is an honors graduate of the University of Richmond’s Robins School of Business. In an active retirement schedule, he devotes his time to service on local non-profit boards, arts and cultural institutions, and his alma mater.
