History

The Arlington Community Foundation (ACF) was established in 1991 by Judge William T. Newman, Jr., a lifelong Arlington resident and former Chief Judge of the 17th Judicial Circuit in Virginia. Inspired by the responsiveness of community foundations he observed in San Francisco after the 1989 earthquake, Judge Newman saw a need for a similar philanthropic entity in Arlington to address the community’s evolving needs.

Since its inception, ACF has played a pivotal role in enhancing the quality of life in Arlington County. The foundation provides philanthropic leadership, raising capital for grants and scholarships to address both current and future community needs. Over the years, it has awarded more than $45 million in grants and scholarships, supporting a wide array of causes including homelessness prevention, education, arts, youth, and families in need.

Today, with assets of $50 million and annual grantmaking over $4 million,  ACF is a cornerstone of philanthropic activity in Arlington, adapting to the evolving needs, strengthening community, and ensuring that charitable efforts have a lasting and meaningful impact.
