Image A Match Made in Arlington: Marymount and ACF

For more than a decade, the scholarship program at Arlington Community Foundation (ACF) has highlighted the generosity and diversity of those who fund the scholarships and the students who receive them.

With the 2023-2024 scholarships application period underway (apply here by February 6), we wanted to take a moment to showcase the generosity of a special community partner to our scholarship program: Marymount University.

Marymount offers up to a $3,000 match for Arlington students who receive an ACF scholarship and choose to attend Marymount. We spoke with a few folks from Marymount who shared why the school started this match and what this partnership means for Arlington’s students:

Why did Marymount start the scholarship match?

Marymount is proud to be known as Arlington’s University, as we are the only higher education institution with its main campus located in Arlington. We contribute significantly to the economic development and the future economy of the County through the 4,000 students who call Marymount their home, with many of them coming from local schools and choosing to stay close to home during their collegiate years and beyond.

It’s our aim to give back to the community, so partnering with a distinguished organization like Arlington Community Foundation just makes sense.

How does the match align with the mission and values of Marymount?

Marymount’s core values are intellectual curiosity, service to others and having a global perspective. We’re a student-centered learning community that values diversity and focuses on the education of the whole person, as we guide the intellectual, ethical and spiritual development of each individual.

Our scholarship matching program with Arlington Community Foundation aligns with our mission and values because it opens the door for local students to pursue a higher education and achieve their dreams, all while staying in Arlington County.

Can you expand on Marymount’s commitment to local students? How does the match embody that commitment?

Of our Fall 2022 enrollment, more than 45 percent of Marymount’s total student population came from Virginia. And when including Maryland and the District of Columbia as well, it’s a grand total of 62.5 percent of our enrollment coming from the local area. Marymount is proud to offer an affordable, values-based education that’s career-focused and close to home for these students, and this scholarship match program plays a key role in helping enroll more local students.

While it’s a relatively new program, we expect it to blossom over the years and make a difference in the lives of many future Marymount Saints.

The 2023-2024 scholarships application window is open through February 6. Please share this with any Arlington students you know who need money for college! Learn more and apply here.

Help review scholarship applications. With over 100 scholarships available, Arlington Community Foundation is seeking volunteers to participate in its annual community scholarship review.
