The Arlington Community Foundation is a charitable organization whose
purpose is to improve the quality of life in Arlington County. By promoting
philanthropy through the growth of private charitable endowment funds,
the Foundation is able to respond with the resources to meet the needs
in our community.
The Arlington Community Foundation wants to use its money wisely, and
it aims to provide funds to assist tax-exempt and other not-for-profit
organizations explore or undertake new work or continue doing effectively
what they have already started. The Foundation welcomes grants for projects
serving Arlington residents.
What
We Fund
Small Grants Program - Small grants of $500 to $2,500 will be
awarded from our permanent, discretionary funds. Grants will be made
for programs from 501(C)(3) organizations and other not-for-profit organizations
that offer creative responses to community needs. A volunteer grants
review committee will recommend grants in all sectors - the arts and
humanities, culture and diversity, environment, civic involvement, housing
and community development, and health and human services.
General Grants Program - General grants of $2,500 to $15,000
will be awarded from various field-of-interest, donor-advised and unrestricted
funds to 501(C)(3) organizations. A volunteer grants review committee
will recommend grants in the following sectors - the arts and humanities,
housing and community development, health and human services, elderly
services, women's issues, food assistance, emergency disaster relief,
environmental protection and the education of American Indian children.
What We Do Not Fund
The Arlington Community Foundation does not make grants for endowments,
capital campaigns, religious purposes, individual debts or political
lobbying.
What We Look For
In reviewing proposals for funding, the Arlington Community Foundation
looks for projects that:
• Promote community assets and meet well-defined community
needs
• Promote volunteer and community involvement
• Encourage cooperation and collaboration
• Foster self-reliance and/or reduce dependency
• Assist non-profit agencies
• Focus on prevention as well as treatment
Grant Application & Review Process
Proposals
must be received at the Arlington Community Foundation Office, 2525
Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, VA 22201 by 5:00 pm on Friday, September
26, 2003.
Please
submit one original and one copy of the proposal, unstapled and not
bound. Proposals may NOT be submitted via facsimile or by electronic
mail. The Washington Regional Association of Grantmakers Common Grant
application is accepted.
Upon submission, applications and accompanying material become the property
of the Foundation and will be used as deemed appropriate by the Foundation.
These materials will be reviewed by individuals and other organizations
as part of the assessment process.
A grants review committee will carefully consider all applications and
make recommendations to the Foundation's Board of Trustees. Applicants
will be notified in writing of the decision of the Board in December.
Reporting - The Foundation requires that grant recipients submit
a final written report to the Foundation within thirty (30) days after
the completion of the project for which the funds are intended.
Publicity - The Foundation asks grant recipients to provide appropriate
acknowledgment of the Arlington Community Foundation's support of their
project in publications, press announcements and other activities.
