Scholarship Program & Community Scholarship Fund

2002 Scholarship Program

The Arlington Community Foundation awards scholarships to college-bound Arlington high school students annually. Twenty-eight different funds support the Scholarship Program, with individual scholarships ranging in size from $500 to $5,000. The Community Scholarship Fund awards scholarships up to $1,000 to high school seniors and to previous Foundation scholarship recipients successfully continuing their studies.

In 2003, the Foundation awarded 79 scholarships to Arlington students, for a total of $138,500 (see the list of 2003 Scholarships awarded below).

2004 Scholarship Program


• Scholarships range from $500 -- $5,000, some renewable for 4 years

• One simple application makes a student eligible for all applicable scholarships in the Scholarship Program

• Application form available January 9, 2004 in Arlington high school counselor's office or online at www.arlcf.org.

• For financial need-based scholarships, it is recommended that the FAFSA form be submitted to the FAFSA office on or before February 1, 2004. Financial information is kept strictly confidential.

• Application deadline: March 1, 2004

2004 Scholarship Application

DEADLINE: Applications must be received in the Arlington Community Foundation Office or Arlington Public High School Guidance Office by 5:00 pm, Monday, March 1, 2004. Applications may NOT be submitted via facsimile or by electronic mail.

The Arlington Community Foundation is located at 2525 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, Virginia.

 

2003 Arlington Community Foundation Scholarships

Altrusa International Scholarship (1 at $1,000) for students with financial need pursuing training or undergraduate credits in fields related to community or public service.

Arlington Achievers Scholarship (1 at $2,000) for an Arlington high school senior with at least a 3.0 GPA to attend a four-year college or university. Preference will be given to students with financial need and who have held part-time employment. The scholarship may be renewed for up to three years provided the student maintains at least a 2.5 GPA. Renewal students only.

Arlington American Legion Post No. 139 Scholarship (total of 8 at $1,000) for high school seniors with financial need and with at least a B average. Four general awards are given and four awards are given specifically to Arlington seniors or graduates from Wakefield, Washington-Lee, Yorktown and O'Connell High Schools. The scholarship may be renewed if the student remains in good standing.

Arlington Chamber of Commerce Scholarship (2 at $2,000) for high school seniors who are Arlington residents to attand an accredited post-secondary institution and who demonstrate financial need, at least a 2.8 GPA, and student and community leadership.

Arlington Gay and Lesbian Alliance Scholarship (2 at $1,000) for Arlington public high school seniors who are members of their school's Gay Straight Alliance Club and whose accomplishments demonstrate significant support for the Arlington Public Schools' policies of diversity, fairness and safety.

Arlington Women's Civic Alliance Scholarship (1 at $1,000) for women living in Arlington with financial need who have earned a high school diploma or GED at least five years ago and are pursuing at least half time an undergraduate degree from a two- or four-year college or university or a certificate from a vocational-technical school. Call or e-mail for the special application.

R. Scott Bates Memorial Scholarship (1 at $3,000) for a Yorktown High School senior with financial need to attend a Virginia college or university.

Ben Burdetsky Youth-In-Action Scholarship (2 at $1,000) for Arlington public high school seniors, one male and one female with financial need, to attend an accredited institution. Consideration will be given to the students' participation in community service, leadership, and athletics.

Elizabeth P. and Edmund D. Campbell/Verizon Scholarship (1 at $1,000) for a Washington-Lee High School senior to attend a four-year college or university.

Civic Federation 911 Scholarship (5 at $1,000) for high school seniors to attend an accredited post-secondary institution with a 2.5 GPA and whose parent has been an Arlington County uniformed public safety personnel or dispatcher for no fewer than 10 years, retired from one of the respective departments, been permanently disabled on the job, or killed in the line of duty.May be renewed for up to three years if students remain in good academic standing.

Community Scholarship Fund (3 at $1,000) for previous Foundation scholarship recipients with financial need who remain in good standing at their undergraduate learning institution.

Lillian Day School Spirit Scholarship (1 at $1,000) for a college-bound Yorktown High School senior with a GPA of 3.5 or higher who has fostered school spirit through active participation in Yorktown High School activities for at least three years.

Jerome Evenson Scholarship (1 at $3,000) for a high school senior to attend a four-year college who is planning to be a science teacher. Preference for students with financial need.

Guernsey Family Scholarship (1 at $500) for an Arlington student with financial need to attend Northern Virginia Community College or George Mason University.

Kenneth M. Haggerty, D.D.S. Scholarship for the Study of Health Sciences (2 at up to $3,000) for a student who resides in Arlington, Falls Church, or McLean with financial need who has completed two years of college, has a declared major in the health sciences, and has maintained at least a 3.0 GPA.

HECHT'S Scholarship (2 at $2,500) for Arlington high school seniors to attend an accredited learning institution. The scholarship may be renewed for three additional years if the student remains in good academic standing. One of the two awards is based on financial need.

Virginia Hendrickson Scholarship (1 at $1,000) for an Arlington high school senior with financial need planning to study social work, psychology, or education. The student must have at least a B+ GPA and must have performed community service.

Ernest A. and Virginia C. Karl Scholarship (3 at $1,000) for Washington-Lee High School seniors with at least a 3.0 GPA and financial need. One scholarship is for a student who is, or whose parent is, a refugee or immigrant to the U.S. Student must be a citizen or permanent resident. May be renewed if students remain in good academic standing.

Rose Bent้ Lee Scholarship (1 at $1,000) for an Arlington resident with financial need to study nursing at a Virginia college or university.

Donn and Michael Marston Scholarship (1 at $1,000) for a high school senior living in Arlington, who has made a significant contribution to the athletic program in his/her Arlington high school. Only available to those who do not already have a full athletic scholarship to college.

Charles M. Munnecke and Elizabeth S. Munnecke Scholarship (2 at up to $5,000) for high school seniors residing in Arlington who have attended an Arlington public high school for their junior and senior years to attend a four-year college or university. Scholarship recipients are asked to return the benefit of the scholarship through future public service to the Arlington community. The scholarship is based on financial need and may be renewed for up to three years if the student remains in good academic standing and an Arlington resident.

New Americans Scholarship (1 at $2,000) for an Arlington public high school senior or college student with financial need who is or whose parent is a refugee or immigrant to the U.S. Student must be a citizen or permanent resident. Renewable through undergraduate degree if student remains in good academic standing.

Gail Nuckols Memorial Scholarship (1 at $1,000) for an Arlington public high school senior with financial need who has a B average to attend a four-year college or university. Preference is given to a student planning to major in education.

Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Parekh Scholarship (2 at $1,000) for Yorktown High School seniors with a GPA of 4.0 to attend a four-year college or university. One of the two awards is based on financial need.

Randolph G. Peyton University of Virginia Scholarship (1 at up to $5,000) for a University of Virginia student; award is based on academic record, character, and financial need. This scholarship may be renewed if the student remains in good standing. Renewal students only.

Ralph Stone/Taylor Pride Scholarship (1 at $1,000) for an Arlington public high school senior who attended Taylor Elementary School to attend a four-year college or university.

Wakefield Goals Scholarship (2 at $1,000) for Wakefield High School seniors with financial need and who are or whose parent(s) are refugees or immigrants to the U.S., to attend George Mason University. Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Preference will be given to students with a 2.5 GPA or higher.

Yorktown High School Scholarship (1 at $1000) for a Yorktown High School senior to attend an accredited learning institution.
