ARLINGTON COMMUNITY FOUNDATION AWARDS $326,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS TO 144 ARLINGTON STUDENTS
The Arlington Community Foundation (ACF) Board of Trustees has just announced $326,000 in scholarship assistance for 144 students to attend college next year. The scholarship awards range from $500 to $10,000, many of which are renewable, allowing students to finish their undergraduate education with financial assistance. Recipients include 61 students who are receiving a Foundation scholarship for the first time and 83 returning college students.
This year's scholarships includes a first time award from the recently established Kar F. Gong Memorial Scholarships Fund which was created by his family as a tribute to his firm beliefs in higher education as the gateway to a productive future. The Arlington Community Fund Community Scholarship to support returning college students also received three sizeable donations that allowed for three extra awards. One was made by a local organization founded by three friends that joined together to help underserved and underprivileged populations in Arlington called Good Sports of Arlington. Another Community Scholarship was given to a student in honor of the Woman's Club of Ashton Heights for the work and contribution they provided to the Arlington Community and a third contribution was made by the Joan Cooper Fund.
Scholarships will be presented at the Arlington Community Foundation's Scholarship Awards Reception on Monday, June 6th at 7:00 p.m. at Kenmore Middle School, 200 S. Carlin Springs Rd, Arlington, VA 22204.
Students' applications were reviewed by a panel of 22 community members who considered their academic record, extra-curricular activities, community involvement, and other criteria, after which a 7 member scholarship committee matched students who were eligible and qualified to the appropriate scholarships.
Over the last 15 years the Arlington Community Foundation has awarded more than $2.4 million to over 590 Arlington students to attend college. ACF Scholarship Chair, Linda Henderson, said, "The Arlington Community Foundation is delighted to provide scholarship support for these outstanding students. I continue to be awed by what they have already accomplished and excited for them as they head off to college. We are indebted to our many community organizations and donors who continue to generously support the Foundation's scholarship program."
The awards are made possible by the generosity of numerous donors and organizations, including those funds named for, in honor of, or in memorial of: Arlington Chamber of Commerce, Arlington Community, Arlington's Future, Arlington Learning in Retirement Inc., Arlington Gay & Lesbian Alliance, Arlington School Library, Arlington Women's Civic Alliance, Barr, Ben Burdetsky, Edith Carolyn Burroughs, Fred A.
