Arlington
Education Fund
Arlington is very much a learning community with a wide range of organizations
offering events and activities that acquaint others with different cultures,
help with homework, teach seniors citizens how to use computers, or
help parents and their children get through the teenage years.
A concerned community member, wanting to make a difference, donated
her refund check of $163.13 to the Arlington Community Foundation as
seed money for the Education Fund. Since then, the Fund has awarded
more than 130 grants totaling approximately $100,000 to assist Arlington
schools and community education programs.
Enhancing the learning experience is the focus of this fund and through
a competitive grant making process, the funds are awarded directly to
classroom teachers and community leaders of nonprofit organizations.
They use these funds to challenge the fast learner as well as entice
the reluctant student, reach out to those at risk, and give the average
student a needed boost through after-school activities, new learning
opportunities, and through innovative learning techniques. Special programs
are funded that help students at risk, provide mentoring and remedial
help, introduce new technology to the community, offer new learning
opportunities to preschoolers through senior adults, and involve parents
in their child's learning process.
