worth your time! SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION DEADLINE: Monday, March 1, 2004 The Arlington Community Foundation has an annual scholarship program for college-bound students. The scholarship awards are made possible by contributions from individuals, businesses, and community organizations. Foundation scholarships are “last dollar” awards.

• The listing of 2004 ACF Scholarships indicating the scholarships for which you would like to be considered. (No limit; you may check off all those for which you are eligible. Note the criteria for each.) • To be considered for financial need-based scholarships, you must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the Federal Student Aid Programs office.* It is strongly recommended that your FAFSA be submitted to the federal office on or as close to February 1st as possible. Attach a copy of your “Computed Information Page” if you filed your FAFSA online OR a copy of page one of your “Student Aid Report” that you received from the FAFSA office if you filed your FAFSA by mail – or fax it to the Foundation office as soon as you receive it. Fax: (703) 243-4796. • A list of extracurricular and non-school related activities and employment. Include hours spent per week, years involved, positions held and awards earned. • Official grade transcript. • Two letters of recommendation: at least one from a guidance counselor or teacher; the second may be from a community member or employer. • Personal Statement: in 250 words or less, what you would like a scholarship donor to know about you. • To be considered for the Civic Federation 911 Scholarship, statement of parent’s department service. • To be considered for the New Americans Scholarship, Ernest and Virginia Karl refugee/immigrant Scholarship or Wakefield Goals Scholarship, proof that student or parent was born outside the U.S. *Financial information is kept strictly confidential. Mail or deliver your application and attachments to the Arlington Community Foundation, 2525 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, VA 22201. Scholarships
____Arlington Achievers Scholarship (1 at $2,000) for an Arlington high school senior with at least a 3.0 GPA to attend a four-year college or university. Preference given to students with financial need and who have held part-time employment. May be renewed up to three years if student maintains at least a 2.5 GPA.
____Arlington Chamber of Commerce Scholarship (2 at $2,000) for high school seniors who are Arlington residents to attend an accredited post-secondary institution and who demonstrate financial need, at least a 2.8 GPA, and student and community leadership. ____Arlington Gay and Lesbian Alliance Scholarship (2 at $1,000) for Arlington public high school seniors who are members of their school’s Gay Straight Alliance Club and whose accomplishments demonstrate significant support for the Arlington Public Schools’ policies of diversity, fairness and safety.
____R. Scott Bates Memorial Scholarship (1 at $3,000) for a Yorktown High School senior with financial need to attend a Virginia college or university. ____Ben Burdetsky Youth-In-Action Scholarship (2 at $1,000) for Arlington public high school seniors, one male and one female, with financial need, to attend an accredited institution. Consideration will be given to the students’ participation in community service, leadership and athletics. ____Elizabeth P. and Edmund D. Campbell/Verizon Scholarship (1 at $1,000) for a Washington-Lee High School senior to attend a four-year college or university. ____Civic Federation 911 Scholarship (5 at $1,000) for high school seniors with a 2.5 GPA to attend an accredited post-secondary institution whose parent has been an Arlington County uniformed public safety personnel or dispatcher for no fewer than 10 years, retired from one of the respective departments, been permanently disabled on the job or killed in the line of duty. May be renewed for up to three years if students remain in good academic standing. ____Community Scholarship Fund (3 at $1,000) for previous Foundation scholarship recipients with financial need who remain in good standing at their undergraduate learning institution. ____Lillian Day School Spirit Scholarship (1 at $1,000) for a college-bound Yorktown High School senior with a GPA of 3.5 or higher who has fostered school spirit through active participation in Yorktown High School activities for at least three years. ____Jerome Evenson Scholarship (1 at $3,000) for an Arlington public high school senior to attend a four-year college who is planning to be a science teacher. Preference for students with financial need. ____Guernsey Family Scholarship (1 at $500) for an Arlington student with financial need to attend Northern Virginia Community College or George Mason University.
____HECHT’S Scholarship (2 at $2,500) for Arlington high school seniors to attend an accredited learning institution. The scholarship may be renewed for three additional years if the student remains in good academic standing. One of the two awards is based on financial need. ____Virginia Hendrickson Scholarship (1 at $1,000) for an Arlington high school senior with financial need planning to study social work, psychology or education. The student must have at least a B+ GPA and must have performed community service. ____Ernest A. and Virginia C. Karl Scholarship (3 at $1,000) for Washington-Lee High School seniors with at least a 3.0 GPA and financial need. One scholarship is for a student who is or whose parent is a refugee or immigrant to the U.S. Student must be a citizen or permanent resident. May be renewed if students remain in good academic standing. ____Rose Benté Lee Scholarship (1 at $1,000) for an Arlington resident with financial need to study nursing at a Virginia college or university.
____New Americans Scholarship (1 at $2,000) for an Arlington public high school senior or college student with financial need who is or whose parent is a refugee or immigrant to the U.S. Student must be a citizen or permanent resident. Renewable through undergraduate degree if student remains in good academic standing. ____Gail Nuckols Memorial Scholarship (1 at $1,000) for an Arlington public high school senior with financial need who has a B average to attend a four-year college or university. Preference is given to a student planning to major in education.
____Randolph G. Peyton University of Virginia Scholarship (1 at up to $3,000) for a University of Virginia student; award to be based on academic record, character and financial need. This scholarship may be renewed if the student remains in good academic standing. ____Ralph Stone/Taylor Pride Scholarship (1 at $1,000) for an Arlington public high school senior who attended Taylor Elementary School to attend a four-year college or university. ____Wakefield Goals Scholarship (2 at $1,000) for Wakefield High School seniors with financial need to attend George Mason University who are or whose parent(s) are refugees or immigrants to the U.S. Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Preference will be given to students with a 2.5 GPA or higher.
