Responses to Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently
Asked Questions about the Arlington Community Foundation (ACF) scholarship
application process and their answers:
1.
Question: When can I apply?
Answer:
The online application is available as a link from www.arlcf.org. The online application takes 45 minutes to 1 hour to complete
and includes the requirement of providing a brief personal statement
about how you would give back to the community. The application, SAT
report, 2 letters of recommendation and transcript are due by
5:00 pm on March 7, 2008. Materials may be postmarked
March 7 and still be considered received on time.
2.
Question: Do you need to send an official transcript
or can you submit a copy?
Answer:
ACF will be collecting the transcript from all Arlington public high
schools directly and students do not need to submit to the ACF. If you
attend a school that is not an Arlington public school, then do send
your official transcript by March 7, 2008.
3.
Question: Do you need my
official SAT report?
Answer:
Your SAT report can be a copy of your official report.
4.
Question: Do you have to be
an Arlington public high school senior or resident to apply for a scholarship?
Answer:
No. Some of our scholarships are for Arlington public high school
seniors only and some are for Arlington residents only.
You are eligible for the ones that apply to you. Apply and provide
your information and the ACF will match you to the ones for which you
qualify.
5.
Question: I need help filling
out my Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA)
Answer: For questions regarding the Free Application for Federal
Student Aid (FAFSA) on the Web, or specific questions about the FAFSA,
call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243)
or 1-319-337-5665. Please note that the ACF requires the Expected Family
Contribution from the Student Aid Report. If your family's taxes are
not final when you submit your FAFSA, you will receive a preliminary
EFC that can be submitted to ACF.
6.
Question: I am having trouble
creating a username for the online application.
Answer:
Please keep in mind this online application system is in use by thousands
of registered users applying to college so your common username may
not be available. Try adding a number to your username. Be sure to write down your username and password and use that anytime you return to edit your application.
7.
Question: What format should
the recommendations be in?
Answer:
We request a recommendation letter that is not a form. However,
if you are the person recommending and you prefer a form we have one
available online, click
here.
8.
Question: I applied online. Where do I send the SAT
and letters of recommendation?
Answer:
If you are a student at an Arlington County Public School
you can submit the forms to your counselor OR to the Arlington Community
Foundation at 2525 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, Virginia, 22201
9.
Question: When will I hear
if I received a scholarship?
Answer:
Scholarship applications are reviewed by two committees and
the ACF Board of Trustees. We anticipate notifying selected applicants
of their scholarship match and amounts by April 25 to allow time for
this offer to be incorporated into college acceptance plans. There will
be a reception for all recipients on June 5 in the evening. Checks are
mailed directly to universities and colleges in August.
10.
Question: I am not a U.S.
citizen; can I apply for a scholarship?
Answer:
You must be one of the following to receive federal
student aid:
a)
U.S. citizen,
b)
U.S. national (includes natives of American Samoa or Swain's Island),
or
c)
U.S. permanent resident who has an I-151, I-551, or I-551C (Alien Registration
Receipt Card).
If
you do not meet these requirements you may still complete the FAFSA
as a noneligible applicant for federal aid and receive a Student Aid
Report with an Expected Family Income that is necessary to be considered
for scholarships requiring financial need.
To
complete a FAFSA you must enter a valid social security number or enter
0's in that field. You must be willing to provide income information
and undocumented students may not wish to complete this form.
Students
not eligible for federal financial aid may apply for a scholarship,
however a FAFSA is required to be considered for financial need based
scholarships.
